UCSF Medical Student Eva Gillis-Buck Awarded UCSF 2020 Long-Term Dean's Prize in Research

Eva Gillis-Buck, UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2020 and incoming general surgery resident, was awarded the UCSF 2020 Long-Term Dean's Prize in Research. 

The Long-Term Dean’s Prize is available to all UCSF graduating medical students. Finalists were selected based on the submission of a one-page abstract, letter of nomination, and 5-minute presentation to the faculty review committee. Five prizes for long-term research were awarded and all winners presented a virtual pre-recorded video at the virtual Inquiry Symposium on April 29th, 2020.

Ms. Gillis-Buck's research work has been supported and mentored by Tippi MacKenzie, M.D., Mark Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., and James Gardner, M.D., Ph.D. Her project investigates a role for Autoimmune Regulator gene (Aire) in supporting pregnancy and maternal-fetal tolerance. This work has relevance to maternal-fetal health, organ transplantation, and cancer biology.  Ms. Gillis-Buck spent two years doing full-time research between her 3rd and 4th years of medical school, funded by the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program. She will begin her UCSF general surgery residency in June 2020.
