Mignote Yilma, M.D. to Join National Clinician Scholars Program at UCSF

Mignote Yilma, M.D., a general surgery resident, was accepted into the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) at UCSF, starting in the 2021-22 academic year. The NCSP is a prestigious two-year post-doctoral fellowship that trains scholars in community-partnered research, implementation and dissemination sciences, and health system transformation. The goal of the program is to train healthcare leaders to work in diverse settings and cultivate health equity. As one of five NCSP Scholars, Dr. Yilma will work with a mentorship team from a variety of disciplines and will participate in formal coursework at the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Dr. Yilma's work is supported by Department of Surgery and Medicine faculty mentors Ryutaro Hirose, M.D. and Neil Mehta, M.D. She plans to dedicate her two research years investigating barriers to solid organ transplantation, as well as exploring the role of primary language, educational level, and social support on transplant waitlist and transplantation outcomes. “In a way, it’s full circle for me,” says Dr. Yilma. “When I first came to the U.S., these are some of the same barriers my family and I experienced, and I’m humbled by this unique opportunity that will allow me to be part of the solution.”
