Surgical Innovations Projects Receive Top Honors at ASAIO Conference
A presentation by UCSF General Surgery Resident and Innovations Fellow Willieford Moses, M.D. (pictured), βSurgical Considerations for an Implantable Renal Replacement Systemβ, was named Top Renal Abstract at the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) Conference in San Francisco on June 15, 2016.
Dr. Moses completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Shuvo Royβs Biodesign Lab in June 2016 in the Surgical Innovations Pathway for research residents in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Moses' research focused on surgical implantation of a bioartificial kidney being developed by the Roy Lab in partnership with Department of Surgery faculty and collaborators across the U.S.
The High Efficiency Artificial Lung (HEAL), a Surgical Innovations Accelerator project, also earned a Pediatric Device Consortia consulting award at the conference. The device utilizes a novel approach for gas exchange membrane fabrication, the goal to create a miniaturized, portable extracorporeal membrane oxygenator with reduced anticoagulation requirements. This offers a better option for neonates with respiratory compromise.
